Confirmed by Disney CEO Bob Iger in November last year, Disney Plus will make its debut in India on 29 March 2020, which follows the European launch on 24 March. Disney Plus has already arrived in a number of countries by offering services through its own app. But it’s quite different in India, as Disney Plus will be available on an existing streaming service in India. That’s the Hotstar.
Launch on Hotstar in India
Disney CEO Bob Iger announced at the company’s first quarter financial conference that Disney Plus will land in India via Hotstar on March 29. That’s to say, Disney wants to merge its Hotstar and Disney Plus into a single app in India.
“We’re also excited to announce that we will be launching Disney+ in India through our Hotstar service on March 29th at the beginning of the Indian Premier League cricket season. We will be rebranding our existing Hotstar VIP and Premium subscription tiers to Disney plus Hotstar. We see this as a great opportunity to use the proven platform of Hotstar to launch the new Disney+ service in one of the most populous countries and fastest growing economies in the world.”
Beta testing before the scheduled launch
It was noted that Disney Plus landed in India on 11 March for Hotstar Premium and Hotstar VIP users, which is earlier than the official launch date. The new version of Hotstar was rebranded Disney + Hotstar, adopting the royal blue and white design for the logo.
“A limited release of the beta version of the Disney+ Hotstar app is currently being tested with a small number of consumers, in preparation for the full-fledged app launch on 29th March.”
However, the new update was released within 24 hours with all of these changes went away. According to Hotstar’s spokesperson, it was a beta version of Disney Plus in India ahead of schedule.
The cost for the beta version
In the beta version, Disney Plus was added to Hotstar for no additional subscription fee. Both Hotstar Premium and Hotstar VIP subscribers had access to Disney content. And the Hotstar Premium plan is billed at Rs 299 per month (about $4) or Rs 999 per year (about $14) while the Hotstar VIP plan is billed at Rs 365 per year ($5).
What was available on the beta version?
According to the new description in the App Store and the Google Play Store, a lot of Disney Plus content was available for beta testing.
“For our India users we’re bringing the world’s best stories from the best storytellers at Disney, Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars. 200+ movies, 100+ shows and 30+ originals!”
Hotstar subscribers found that they had access to many Disney originals, including Disney Family Sunday, One Day at Disney, The World According to Jeff Goldblum, The Mandalorian, Forky Asks a Question, Encore, Diary of a Future President, High School Musical: The Musical – The Series, etc. It should be noted that only Hotstar subscribers have access to Disney Plus content. And the content is available to Hotstar Premium and VIP subscribers in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. But only Hotstar Premium users can access content in English.
Don’t forget that the content of Hotstar is also available for Hotstar users. Hotstar VIP subscribers have unlimited access to live sports (such as VIVO IPL, Premier League, Formula 1 and Tennis), the latest Star TV series before they premiere on TV, the latest Bollywood movies, Hotstar’s exclusive show library produced as Hotstar Specials. While Hotstar Premium subscribers have access to everything on VIP & the latest American TV shows, Hollywood movies, shows and originals in all languages, including English.
The content and price of the official launch
The beta version was rolled back from the Indian market. It will finally land on India via Hotstar on the 29th of March as scheduled. What will be available on Disney Plus Hotstar after the official launch has yet to be announced. But one thing is for sure that Hotstar will provide better streaming services with more Disney Plus content. It’s not long before the Indians can watch the original TV shows and films from Disney.
Why do you need a VPN to watch Disney Plus content?
The good thing is that Disney Plus is coming to a number of countries. But the contents vary from country to country. You’ll need a virtual private network to access geo-blocked content. It unblocks websites for you by masking your actual IP address with that of your server. You are allowed to watch your favorite shows that are not available in your country.
Don’t hesitate to choose a RitaVPN package. It’s the best VPN for you to defeat the geo-blocks and stay safe online.
RitaVPN lets you enjoy bufferless streaming on Disney Plus because it does not limit the bandwidth. It also secures your Internet connection by redirecting your requests through its encrypted tunnel. So you can enjoy 100% online invisibility from hackers and government spies who are trying to track you on the Internet.
